Heart-Healthy Living During COVID-19
A lot has changed over the past year due to COVID-19. But one thing that has stayed the same is the importance of building healthy habits. That’s especially crucial when you have coronary artery disease (CAD) or heart failure (HF). Here’s how to prioritize taking your medicines and being physically active, pandemic-style.
Stay your healthiest
Medicines often play a key role in treating CAD or HF. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about getting a 90-day supply of long-term meds so that you don’t have to go to the pharmacy as often. To help yourself remember to take every dose, use a memory aid such as a:
Calendar on which you mark each dose you take
Pill box divided into different sections for each day of the week
Pill bottle cap with a timer that beeps when it’s time for a dose
Having CAD or HF increases your risk for severe illness from COVID-19. So do all you can to optimize your health, and get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it’s available to you.
Get moving outdoors
Regular physical activity helps manage your cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and weight. Follow your provider’s advice about being active. Just be sure to protect yourself and others when exercising in public places, even if you’ve already received the COVID-19 vaccine.
Outdoor activities are lower risk than those done in less ventilated indoor spaces. Whether you’re taking a walk, riding your bike, or doing tai chi in the park, stay at least 6 feet from others who don’t live with you. If that isn’t possible, find a less crowded spot. Wear a mask for added safety.
Look for fun ways to be more active at home, too. For example, you might enjoy a fitness video or virtual class for older adults.
